LV & EXP

Undertale tends to simplify the idea of these stats out of necessity because of the mechanical limits of the game, but it doesn't quite work with the gray areas of outside characters. So this post is to explain it as best I can to quantify it for other canons, characters, etc. since this is a large part of Sans' initial reaction to people.

> EXP / Execution Points

A way of quantifying the pain you have inflicted on others. When you kill someone, your EXP increases.

EXP happens upon killing another being. While method of killing is irrelevant (whether self-defense or otherwise), the killing must be done by the person. A forced killing (such as through mind control) doesn't count, because they didn't do it themselves. Accidental killings still count, as do mercy killings; harm can be caused for good sometimes, but it's still harm.

> LV / LOVE / Level of Violence

A way of measuring someone's capacity to hurt. The more you kill, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. The more you distance yourself, the less you will hurt. The more easily you can bring yourself to hurt others.

LV happens when someone actually becomes desensitized to killing others. To rephrase Sans' words, it's how you measure the way you look at other sapient beings in a "murder" sense, how you would mentally feel (or not) killing them, if you would have regrets or remorse.

NONE
These are for innocents. Young children, or people who (for whatever reason) cannot kill without severe mental stress (if they can kill at all).

LOW
People who have killed a little, but are still connected to others, unable to turn off guilt or remorse for whoever it might be that they've killed.

MODERATE
Warriors, fighters by trade, or similar. These are people who can kill without hesitation if need be, and likely very much have, but still see others as people and are willing to treat them as such.

HIGH
A major disconnect has happened by now. These people don't feel a connection to others, whether that be through seeing them as an "other" or simply not recognizing them as feeling beings (or caring that they are). This is the point where Sans becomes wary.

MAX
Flowey, Genocide Chara, serial killers. Murderers. People who are completely disconnected with society and others as a whole and feel nothing wrong with simply murdering or harming others. They don't have to be active in doing so for whatever reason, necessarily, just that they're more than capable of it. At this point, Sans is hostile, though he may not act openly so depending on the situation.
